SIRA Model of Care for Lower Back Injuries

Back injuries constitute one in five injuries in the workers’ compensation scheme.

SIRA consulted with clinical experts to provide recommendations for the establishment of evidence-based standards and education for the effective management of back injuries (compensable and otherwise).  The subsequent model released by SIRA in February 2024, acts as a best-practice guide for treating clinicians caring for people with low back pain, with different treatment and care pathways for people with low back pain depending on a triage approach. It encourages self-management, return to work and usual activity, empowering the person in their recovery journey through a holistic and person-centered approach.

The model recommends that people use work as part of their recovery, and by talking to their doctor and employer about what they can do at work to help them stay active and recover.
